I love how close Virginia wine country is from DC. The rolling green hills covered in vines are a breath of fresh air from the chaotic city. Set in the quiet farmlands of Virginia lie two of my favorite wineries, Sunset Hills and Doukenie.
Sunset Hills tasting room is a gorgeous fully restored barn with a fabulous outdoor seating area overlooking a pond dotted with swaying weeping willows. Make sure to grab a bottle of rosé and a few wine glasses and enjoy a picnic on the grounds.
Just a short drive away you will find Doukenie. Here you can find one of the best Cabernet Francs this side of the Mississippi. You can enjoy live music and seasonal summer dinners on the weekends; if you are lucky you might even be able to snag some homemade baklava! TIP: Request a barrel tasting, it was quite a highlight!
After a day of wine tasting you can work up quite an appetite, and I have just the spot for a fabulous dinner to finish off a perfect day in wine country. Market Table Bistro serves refined and tantalizing modern cuisine in the sleepy town of Lovettsville. Homemade pasta, fresh ingredients and incredible cocktails add a breathe of fresh air to the Virginia culinary scene.
