If you are looking to beat the heat of summer, try an escape to the beautiful Swiss Alps. The towering alpine mountains boast roaring rivers, hanging glaciers, and plenty of that white stuff…snow! The lush green hillsides harbor picturesque towns and are the perfect backdrop for the snow-capped mountains.
Zermatt is a sleepy village nestled into the valley below the famous Matterhorn. This car free town is the perfect escape if you are looking for a bit of peace and quiet mixed with a whole lot of adventure. Walking, train, and the occasional horse drawn carriage are the best modes of transportation.
There are plenty of things to enjoy in Zermatt. If you are the adventurous spirit like me, you can fill your days hiking to stunning overlooks, skiing (yep, even in the summer), mountain biking or rock climbing! Plus there are also great spas and shopping for when you get back to town!
For those who want a bit of adventure, but maybe not as extreme as scaling a 500 ft rock face, book a ticket on the Cog Railway. This train will take you to the top of the Gornergrat where you will be treated to stunning panoramic views of the Matterhorn, snow-capped mountains as far as the eye can see, and plenty of glaciers. Make sure to bring plenty of layers as the weather can change very quickly, plus you need to stay warm while playing in the snow!
Leave enough time to eat at Vis-À-Vis restaurant before heading back down the mountain. The warm wood clad walls give you the feeling of being in a Swiss Chalet. The goulash is one of my favorites but if you really feel like indulging make sure to try the “Käseschnitte Williamine mit Speck und winer Birne”… say that ten times fast! This Swiss treat is toasted cheese served with baked pear, salty bacon, and topped with fresh thyme, and homemade preserves. It will change your life!
Now that I am back in the states, I still dream about early morning sunrises, incredible Swiss cuisine, and getting lost amongst the towering Alps. Zermatt is the PERFECT destination for your next trip!
