Getting away from it all and escaping to the mountains this past Christmas filled me with so much joy! It allowed our family to come together without the stress that comes with the holidays and allowed us to focus on what is really important: being with the people you love most. One of my favorite Southern mountain escapes is the quant upscale mountain town of Highlands, North Carolina, a perfect place to relax and unwind.
The perfect place to stay, at Christmas or any other time of year, is Old Edwards Inn and Spa. Old world charms meets modern luxury at this beautiful mountain resort. Check in includes champagne and over-stuffed chairs next to a roaring fire. In full holiday spirit, the inn exuded Christmas mountain chic with mahogany clad walls, river stone fireplaces, and Christmas trees full of twinkling lights.
Our family opted to stay in one of Old Edwards’ stunning cottages. The three bedroom house with oversized living rooms and three fireplaces was just perfect for us all to gather for the holidays! And we were even able to add a Christmas tree we bought at the local nursery to really add to the holiday spirit (we added berries and pine cones in the woods to decorate with)!
For Christmas dinner, we ate at Madison’s where we were each greeted with a Christmas Cracker and enjoyed a modern take on the traditional Christmas meal. Make sure to reserve your table for Christmas dinner at Madison’s ahead of time as they book up fast! If you are visiting outside of the holidays, summer is the Inn’s true busy season and you should also make reservations well in advance in summer.
And of course no trip to Old Edwards is complete without indulging in their world class spa. TIP: book your treatments weeks ahead of time and opt for evening treatments, the mornings, especially around Christmas, tend to be insanely busy but we had the place to ourselves in the early evening!
Next year, try a family Christmas getaway in the beautiful Smoky Mountains. It just might become your new family tradition for the holidays! Or visit Highlands and Old Edwards Inn and Spa any other time of year for a relaxing Southern mountain getaway.
