This coming Saturday is one of my favorite days of the year: Earth Day! On Saturday, make sure you are extra kind to this incredible world we live in: pick up trash if you see it, celebrate in the great outdoors, or maybe even have a romantic candlelit dinner in the dark to conserve just a little bit of power!
In celebration of our beautiful planet I am sharing my top 5 FAVORITE places I have been to. I hope this serves as an inspiration to go out, explore, and enjoy this incredible gift, our planet, that we have been given.
Once you go you get bit by the “I love Africa” bug, you will dream about it constantly, long for it, and be scrambling to go back. It is the type of place that will affect you on a completely spiritual level (even if you’re not religious)! In Southern Africa, I would have to say Botswana and Namibia were my favorites. Tip: check out the Zambezi Queen (technically in Namibia but you get there through Botswana) for an out-of-this-world experience. The Zambezi Queen is a 5 star river boat with master suites, incredible cuisine, and a plunge pool on the bow. You sail up and down the Chobe river and gaze out at hundreds of elephants, and other game! (You can check out a more detailed post here)! But then there is Morocco. Ah, Morocco, if you are looking for an experience that truly takes you out of your element, this exotic country will make you feel as though you stepped back in time. Tip: make sure to take the time to spend a night beneath a bowl of stars in the Sahara desert, it is an unforgettable experience!
The land of fire and ice will leave you breathless and it will bring out the inner explorer you may have been suppressing. Tip: Ditch the tour buses (aka cattle cars) and make sure to rent a car and trek out on your own ( you will feel like Christopher Colombus as you explore the diverse lunar-like landscape)! If you’re lucky, you may even be treated to the Northern Lights, a sight you will not soon forget! (You can read about some of my favorite places here, here, and here).
Istanbul is truly one of the most incredible cities I have ever traveled to in the world. East meets west in this bustling ancient city. The juxtaposition of old and new collide in this gorgeous city set right on the turquoise green waters of the Bosporus. Tip: splurge and rent a private boat for the evening and watch the sun dip below the horizon. Dine on fresh fish as you begin to see the lights of Istanbul illuminate the darkening sky. (You can read more about this amazing city here, and here).
4.) (Northern) Thailand:
W all know Thailand is amazing. Hello, “thai food” (one of my favorite cuisines)! However I want to focus on Northern Thailand. Forget the beaches of the south (oh yes I did just say that), Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai is where its all at! This gorgeous jungle full of rolling hills is littered with amazing temples and is where you can get up close and personal with elephants. Tip: if you win the lottery or simply want to forgo paying rent for a month, you MUST stay at the Four Seasons Tented Camp. Here you will be able to interact with rescued elephants and learn to become a mahout. Plus, as another perk, you get to have breakfast every morning with these gentle giants. This is truly a complete immersion with elephants! To this day, this is one of my favorite hotels I have ever stayed at IN THE WORLD!
Mexico has gotten a bad wrap over the years, but I am here to tell you it is safe AND still as magical as ever. Traveling to Mexico just means you need to be a smart traveler. Tulum is the perfect quick getaway with beautiful eco hotels, amazing boutiques (like my personal favorite Caravana Tulum), and all the fresh tacos and margs you could ever want for CHEAP! When exploring the crystal clear cenotes, make sure you get there right when they open to avoid the crowds and be prepared for quite the chill when you jump in. The water is very hmmm, refreshing! (More coming soon on my time in Tulum stay tuned)!
Well I hope this has reignited the travel bug within you and remember to love this crazy beautiful earth we call home!
