Recently Mariella from Splendor Styling, a good friend and amazing interior designer, approached me about collaborating and creating a one-of-a-kind DIY rope and chain art installation for her home. I jumped at the chance to work with such an incredible creative!
I am such a huge fan of DIY everything. This installation would easily cost you thousands at a high end home decor store. If you are willing to give up half a day, you can create this project for about $150.00, it would be even less if you use less thick rope than we did.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
1.) Rope, two different sizes (minimum). The bigger the better. Using larger rope makes a bigger impact.
2.) Chains, three different sizes (you could opt for just one or two) in both gold and black (you can really choose any color that fits your style!)
3.) Dowel rod (for hanging).
4.) Silver rings (we found these at Home Depot).
5.) Jute twine.
6.) Gorilla tape.
7.) Saw (only if your rope is insanely thick like ours was!).
9.) Anchors to attach art to wall.
10.) Time, patience, and a really fab playlist !!!!!!
Cut all rope to your desired length. I highly suggest a floor-to-ceiling installation but you could do shorter if so desired.
Unravel one end of your first piece of rope.
Cut a 12 inch piece of jute twine.
Insert jute twine in between the strands of unraveled rope.
Re-ravel the rope back up. This sounds more complicated than it is but you can just follow the natural curve of the rope. It’s like braiding hair!
Take Gorilla Tape and secure the end of rope you just re-raveled. The top of the tape should be about 1 inch below end.
Wrap jute twine from base of Gorilla Tape to the top. Make sure no tape is showing. Tie a knot to secure the jute twine.
Take the jute twine that is secured into the rope (from step four). Tie it in a secure knot and attach a silver ring.
Repeat as many times as necessary with more pieces of rope. The goal should be to have enough rope to cover the width of the installation.
Here is the fun part where you get to create your installation. Lay the dowel on the ground. Arrange the ropes and chains in whatever order you think is visually appealing. Don’t attach the chains or thread the silver rings on the dowel until you are satisfied with the order and pattern.
Attach the rope and chains to the dowel. Thread the silver rings through the dowel and wrap the chains over the dowel in the pattern created in Step 9.
Anchor to the wall or ceiling and enjoy a one-of-a-kind art piece!
