The Atacama desert is a wonderful mix of extremes. Sweltering heat during the day leads to perfectly cool sunsets followed by freezing temperatures at night. Packing for such a wide variety of climates can be a challenge, so I chose versatile pieces that are great for layering.
When I think of packing for desert life, I imagine neutral tones, with pops of red and orange like the blazing sunrises and sunsets that move across the sky each day. Whether horseback riding, hiking, or simply lounging I want the perfect mix of comfort and style. I love playing with pattern and texture and layering soft alpaca sweaters with rough hewn leather and suede. And a few trusty hats are necessary for shade from the blazing sun.
TIP: I always buy local when I travel, so leave some room in your suitcase to bring back local treasures like this handmade poncho I found in a local market. The best part is no one will be wearing what you are when you get back home!
For my footwear I could not have survived without my trusty Sorel and Frye boots. Both are fashionable and incredibly comfortable. These two companies have truly mastered functionality and timeless style.
